The Tree
All the things I have seen as I grew up
I saw you remove a king's head, as his son fled
I saw the Bonnie Prince sail back to France
And break free from repression when there seemed little chance
All the things I have seen as I reach for the sky
I saw you change the fields of France to mud and to blood
I saw boats that could sail deep beneath the sea
And people run from their homes and flee
All these things have I seen as I grew up
I saw you light up your homes and speak on telephones
I saw you make machines to record someone's voice
And break away from your chains to land on the moon
All these things I have seen as I reach for the sky
I saw you act as one to stop a war that had begun
I saw you laugh at all the jokes that you had scribed
Laugh and cry as you lived and you died
I feel the sun upon my back
I feel earth beneath my feet
I reach towards the sky and imagine I can fly
I drop my seed to the ground, watching
My children grow all around
